FEDEM- a Powerful Simulation Software for Wind Turbines

FEDEM has the ability to simulate the dynamics of complete Wind Turbine systems exited with wind loads, both for onshore turbines, offshore turbines and floating offshore turbines.

Integrated Wind Loads

Wind loads are generated from AeroDyn which is a fully integrated tool package developed by NREL (US). This includes non-linear deflection of blades. AeroDyn forces are applied at nodal points on the blades which are modeled as beam elements with varying stiffness and mass properties.

Rigid and Flexible components

Wind Turbines modelled in FEDEM enables the use of both rigid and flexible components. All components can be analyzed as long as they possess linear material behavior, drive train elements, casings, structural components and so on.

FEDEM- for Design of Wind Turbines 

Early in the design process of a wind turbine, before the components are developed, mainly rigid body components are used. At this stage the main bearing loads are optimized. When the mechanical system is well defined, the component representations are changed from rigid body to flexible body by using FE-models.

FEDEM- for trouble-shooting of commercial Wind Turbines

Vibration analyses of the wind turbine in order to enlighten fatigue issues. The software can also be used in order to investigate defects of a wind turbine, as a pre-active maintenance tool or to calculate fatigue/ lifetime of a wind turbine system.

FEDEM- a Powerful Simulation tool

Introduction of flexible bodies will not slow down the dynamical simulation times due to FEDEMs finite element reduction technology. The flexible model will include non-linear deflection of blades. Load, displacement, acceleration, virtual strain gauge stresses and time histories is presented in a powerful graph plotter. Stresses are presented as contour time animations. Fatigue is presented as a single value for the strain gauges or as a contour plot if strain coat fatigue is performed.

Floating Wind Turbines implemented in the same model

The wind turbine model is build for the opportunity to simulate a floating wind turbine system including drag forces, waves and wind in one model.

FEDEM- integrated control-system

FEDEM has an integrated control-system which enables automatic adjustment of blade pitch angle depending on wind conditions or other preset control parameters.
